The Tragic Death of Payne Stewart

by Thomas Morrell
Sadly, on October 25, 1999, one of the best and most respected golfers in the PGA unexpectedly lost his life. At age 42, most pro golfers are in between the hungry young talent coming on and the Senior PGA Tour, which is not too many years away. Payne Stewart won his second US Open this year and was back at the top of his game and his life, as well. Let us take a look at this tragic event as it is shown in the cards.

Looking at his 28-year chart, we can see he was in his 4-year Jupiter Period, which runs from the age of 40 through 43. In this position was the 5 of Spades. This indicates changes in both his life and work and under the influence of Jupiter, they would be both expansive and beneficial. Jupiter is also the planet that rules religion and spirituality and it was known that Payne had recently deepened his religious faith.

In his Yearly Chart, his Sun Return Card was the 8 of Diamonds. This signifies much recognition and rising to prominence for him this year. The 8 of Diamonds also was his Natal Mercury Card, which means the rise might be sudden or quick. At the time of the accident, he was in his 52-day Uranus Period. Many times accidents can  happen under the unpredictable influence of Uranus and can also be unusual or unexpected. He had the Jack of Diamonds in this position, which may represent one of the men he was with on the plane. This is also the BirthCard for the United States and the news spread very quickly across the entire country. The King of Clubs was the Vertical Uranus Card. As a Court Card, this can also represent a man, but also a powerful communication as it is a Club, which is the element of Air in the Cards.

He was in his 13-day Mercury Period in his 4th Seasonal chart  of the year. He had the 10 of Hearts in this position, which usually represents a group of people (he was with 5 other people on the plane). Being in Mercury, it would most likely involve communication or a short trip. (In today's world, a Lear Jet ride from Florida to Texas, is probably considered a short trip.) The Vertical Mercury Card was the Queen of Hearts and this card originally sits in the Neptune Column/Neptune Line. Neptune rules sleep and dreams and this may account for the passengers of the plane becoming unconscious when the cabin lost pressure. The 4th Seasonal Chart of the 42nd year is derived from Plate Number 81. Payne Stewart's BirthCard is the 10 of Clubs and in this plate, it sits in the Uranus Line.  It also falls in the Jack of Diamonds position in the original Spiritual Plate, creating a Mystic Reception with the current  52-day Uranus Card.

He was in his 10th 28-day Lunar cycle of the year. In this chart, he was in his 4-day Saturn Period. Saturn is usually considered a difficult influence in the Cards and in this position, he had the Jack of Diamonds again, just as in the Yearly Chart. When two cards line up at the same time such as this, it is called a Mystic Conjunction and usually intensifies the influence. And, as mentioned above, he was also picking up this influence by the position of his BirthCard in the Seasonal chart. The Saturn Vertical Card was the Jack of Spades, his Inner Card of the Soul. The Inner and Outer Soul Cards are similar to the Nodes in Astrology and when they are aspected in Traditional Astrology, they are not considered favorable. The Jack of Spades also fell in the original Life Plate position of the 9 of Spades, one of the traditional 'death' cards in this system. His BirthCard sat in what is called the 'transformation box', both the 9 of Spades, (spiritually) and the 6 of Spades (materially), originally fell into this box, both known as traditional death cards. When a card falls into this position, there is usually a powerful transformation in one's life; unfortunately, in this case, it was a death. It is in the Uranus Column (unexpected, accident ) and the Neptune Line (sleep, dream). (The 10th Lunar Chart for the 42nd year is derived from Plate #15.)

In his 39th Weekly Chart, he was in a Mars day and the first 7 cards, including his BirthCard fell into the Mars Line, as well. Mar's energy combined with the energy of Uranus can  be an accident waiting to happen. The name* Titanic has a symbolic value of 50, which is the Solar Value of the Jack of Spades. Natally, the Jack of Spades falls in the Uranus Column/Mars Line. He had the King of Clubs in Mars, which could represent a man he was with that day. Under Mars, it would most likely be dealing with  work. The Vertical** Mars Card for the day was the 9 of Spades, again, one of the traditional death Cards. The Mars Return Card was the 10 of Hearts, again representing a group of people.

Both Jupiter and Neptune rule travel in the Cards. In the Seasonal Chart, Payne had the 7 of Spades in Jupiter, and in the Weekly Chart, he had the 7 of Spades in Neptune. The 7 of Spades indicates obstacles and challenges in work and health. Neptune is the ruler of the #7 and besides the challenges associated with this card, it may point to the people on the plane being unconcious. Numerologically, it was the 25th day of the month which reduces to 7 ( 2 + 5 = 7), ruled by Neptune. October 25th is also a 10 of Hearts day, a card that showed up more than once in Payne Stewart's Card Charts.

It was a very unusual event and very tragic and sad, as well. His BirthCard is the 10 of Clubs which natally sits in the Crown Line. This insures his recognition and respect and he will be remembered and greatly missed for years to come.

I remember Payne Stewart, for more than just his knickers and hat, as I live in the area where he won his first golf tournament of his professional career - The Quad Cities Open, (now the John Deere Classic).
